Mayor Nardella stated that the aim of this measure is to stop Airbnb and other sites offering short-term accommodation and vacations from emptying Florence's historic city center and to protect local housing, and that they cannot stand by and watch this situation.
In the historic city center of Florence, some 8,500 houses are currently being used in this way, while the right-wing coalition government is working on a bill to impose restrictions on the short-term vacation rental market in Italy.
It is stated that the aim of the bill is to prevent short-term rentals from being disproportionate to businesses such as hotels that offer local accommodation capacity in tourism, to protect the residential quality of city centers and to prevent local people from being negatively affected by the pricing in the housing market.
