In Venice, one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations, municipal officials announced that the tax for day-trippers will be increased next year, the number of days tourists must pay to enter the city and the fee for last-minute bookings will be doubled to 10 euros. While Mayor Luigi Brugnaro emphasized that the tax is aimed at helping the city and its inhabitants to alleviate the inconvenience caused by tourism overload and to prevent large influxes of visitors on busy holidays and weekends, venice announced last year that it would introduce the long-discussed day visitor fee after narrowly avoiding being placed on the United Nations' (UN) list of endangered heritage sites, largely due to overtourism. Visitors staying overnight in the historic center are exempt from the fee because they already pay a tourist tax.HOW VENICE ENTRANCE FEE WILL BE APPLIEDThe new tax will apply from April 18 to July 27, every Friday through Sunday and on holidays, for a total of 54 days, almost double the number of days in the previous period. Tourists who do not make a reservation until four days in advance will pay 10 euros instead of the usual 5 euros. The tax on tourists will be in effect during peak hours, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Venice residents, visitors born in Venice students and workers, as well as tourists with hotel or other accommodation reservations are exempt from the charge.FINES FOR NON-PAYMENTAnyone found outside the designated checkpoints without the necessary documents will face fines. The fines will range from 50 to 300 euros, with the maximum entry fee allowed by law set at 10 euros, with officials stressing that the aim of the program is to reduce crowds on peak days, encourage longer visits and improve the quality of life for residents.UNESCO cited the scheme last September when it decided not to add the city to its list of endangered world heritage sites. The same decision was averted two years ago with the banning of cruises from St. Mark's Basin and the Giudecca Canal.
