According to tourism statistics, tourism revenue increased by 23.1 percent in the second quarter of April, May and June compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 12 billion 975 million 307 thousand dollars, while 14.5 percent of tourism revenue was generated from non-resident citizens visiting Turkey.
While 9 billion 714 million 687 thousand dollars of the expenditures made in this quarter were personal expenditures and 3 billion 260 million 620 thousand dollars were package tour expenditures, the number of visitors departing from Turkey increased by 17.2 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 13 million 995 thousand 495 people. In the first quarter of the year, the number of visitors departing from Turkey increased by 26.8 percent.
While 12 percent of the visitors in the second quarter were non-resident citizens with 1 million 676 thousand 147 people, the average overnight expenditure of visitors departing from Turkey in this quarter was 112 dollars. The average overnight expenditure of citizens residing abroad was recorded as 83 dollars. In this quarter, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, sports, education and culture expenditures increased by 158.2 percent, food and beverage expenditures by 45.4 percent and international transportation expenditures by 38.6 percent.
Tourism expenditure, which consists of the expenditures of citizens residing in Turkey and visiting other countries, increased by 67 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and was recorded as 1 billion 766 million 639 thousand dollars, of which 1 billion 611 million 638 thousand dollars was personal and 155 million dollars was package tour expenditures. In this quarter, the number of citizens visiting abroad increased by 72.7 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 2 million 877 thousand 450 people, while their average expenditure per person was 614 dollars. This expenditure was 677 dollars in the first quarter of 2023 and 635 dollars in the second quarter of 2022.
While the total number of overnight stays decreased from 12.7 in the first quarter of 2022 to 8.4 in the second quarter, the average number of overnight stays of citizens residing in Turkey decreased from 15.1 to 13. In the second quarter of 2022, the average number of overnight stays was 16.3.
According to the data announced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the number of visitors to Turkey in 2023 increased by 17.48 percent compared to the first 6 months of 2022 (January-June), while the number of citizens residing abroad visiting Turkey in 2023 increased by 5.11 percent compared to the first 6 months of 2022 (January-June).
In the first 6 months of 2023, the number of visitors to Turkey totaled 22 million 945 thousand people. Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said that tourism revenues increased by 27 percent in the first 6 months of the year to 21 billion 734 million 366 thousand dollars.
