Among the islands in question is the island of Inis Mor the scene of the hit movie The Banshees of Inisherin, while the islands on the Atlantic coast, which are part of Ireland's Our Living Islands program, do not have access to the mainland by bridge and can be difficult to access due to large waves from time to time.
Starting on July 1st, the Irish Government will now identify and put up for sale empty houses on the islands, emphasizing that the aim of the program is to bring a sustainable and vibrant life to the islands and increase the population in the coming years.
It is stated that many people fleeing big cities may prefer to live on the islands thanks to remote working, while these people should buy abandoned houses on the islands and settle here by renovating them.
