In Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, which aims to reduce the number of tourists and environmental pollution, the municipality governed by social democrats, environmentalists and the center-right D66 party announced that it decided to ban large ships, emphasizing that large cruise ships that cause pollution are not compatible with the city's sustainability goals.
The statement also emphasized that cruise ships are not compatible with the planned new bridge between the historic southern part of the city and the northern part, and the decision means the closure of the cruise ship terminal on the banks of the River Ij near Amsterdam's main train station.
Amsterdam, one of the cities that almost became a victim of its own popularity, started to host 20 million tourists a year after some of them left because they saw it as a party city.
The municipality had previously banned smoking marijuana on the streets in the center of Amsterdam.
