In his statement at the 2023 Year Evaluation Meeting, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, who also announced the new regulation on houses rented daily through the Airbnb platform, said that Turkey's tourism revenue in the first 6 months of 2023 increased by 27 percent compared to the same period last year and reached 21 billion 734 million dollars, while the number of tourists visiting Turkey in the same period increased by 17.5 percent to 22 million 945 thousand.
Noting that the first 6 months of the year were closed with 19 million 530 thousand visitors in 2022 and 22 million 945 thousand visitors in 2023, with an increase of 17.5 percent, Minister Ersoy stated that the occupancies in the regions that appeal to high income were below expectations and that the Russians stayed in the houses they bought in Turkey instead of hotels, and that these houses were also rented to other tourists, Minister Ersoy stated that certification and tax obligation will be introduced for daily rented houses.
Minister Ersoy also noted that they are shaping the legislation and all of them will be transformed into a formal economy.
