59-year-old Michelin starred Italian chef Marco Sacco cooked scallop risotto for the guests attending the wedding ceremony at his world-famous piccolo lago di Verbania restaurant in Italy, but shortly after the food was served to the wedding guests, many guests went to the hospital with complaints of nausea and vomiting.
The Michelin-starred celebrity chef and Piccolo Lago di Verbania restaurant manager Raffaella Marchetti were charged with negligence and trading in harmful foodstuffs, and both Sacco and Marchetti were ordered to pay £18,000 in compensation, including £6,800 to the wedding couple and £200 to each of the 53 guests. In addition to the fines, the pair were sentenced to two months and 20 days in prison with a conditional suspension.
While it was concluded that the oysters imported from France prepared by Michelin-starred Italian chef Marco Sacco and served to guests were infected with norovirus, the oysters were allegedly served raw as there was no warning on the sealed packaging prohibiting such use.
After the guests who were poisoned after the Michelin starred chef served the food infected with the virus in the world-famous restaurant made headlines in Italy, fears emerged that the country may give up ordering fresh fish dishes such as raw oysters and mussels.
